Recently some people have been using the example of rejecting the Holocost to criticize Europeans for their double standards. This may be a dangerous tactic. For example, if tomorrow, the laws regarding rejecting the holocost are repealed ... what will happen to our platform? We don't want equal rights to criticize by allowing people to insult our Prophet (SAW). We have a problem with this regardless if they apply their priciples uniformly, and without prejudice. I'm not saying we shouldn't ask for an apology from them, but I think it won't work. By them apologizing, they would be apologizing for their constitution, and fundamental ideologies - which they will fight to defend. It really is, in this case, us vs. them. Legally, it is a simple matter. By consensus in all 4 schools of thought, the person who criticizes the Prophet must be put to death. This is one of the deeds by which a man deserves to be killed. It is disliked for people to take the law into their own hands to kill the person. However, if someone does, they do not deserved to be killed since they killed a person who deserved to die. Instead, they are disciplined by the ruler for not following the due process. The disbelievers will never be comfortable with this aspect of Islam. The freedom to criticize Islam (and all religions - generally) is an integral part of their system, and is in complete conflict with the religion that Allah has chosen. It is impossible for this difference to be reconcilled. The people who made these comics knew that the Prophet (saw) entrusted the people comming after him to raise the Name of Allah, and make Islam victorious above all other religions. They are angry because the Prophet (saw) has predicted that their stubborn disbelief will come to an end by the hands of His Ummah. Unfortunately, the state of the Ummah has fallen to such a low level that the disbelievers feel free to say and do whatever they wish with Islam and it's followers. The najis amongst mankind have occupied a Haram, and influence the others. They have looted, plundered, desecrated the Holy and other lands. They have murdered those who have belief in Allah and His Messenger.
