salaam ahmed,

i have a question that has been a curiousity of mine for some years now, and alas i shall ask it. so i am somewhat aware of how some letters have numbers denoted to them, hence i guess the 786, but why do arabs use numbers intermittently in a rather random fashion in words, like 3 in al-Hamdulillah, or all the numbers u used in words up there?
