yes, it's much more open than the iphone, and there hasn't been enough time for apps to show up (for example, for the arabic, etc). however, the iphone look and feel and usability in general are just so much better.

lol so much better that i bought the phone on tuesday and sold it on wednesday and went back to my iphone (literally). i wouldn't mind having it for development, but since i can only use one phone at a time, i have to go with the iphone...

You left out the fact that development on the G1 is *open*, compared to the iPhone. Also, as for the application-level problems, G1 hasn't had the time iPhone has for apps to be developed. I'm certain more and better apps will appear for the G1 with time.

The USB cable issue - that upsets me. I can't believe that. What is it with phone makers that they have to mess with one of the best standards in existence - the USB cable?! Apparently it was getting _too_ standard, 'cause everyone has, like, 5 lying around them.

And most importantly, the G1 is based almost completely on free software, so you don't have to worry (as much) about proprietary software. Also, the hardware itself is much more open than other models, if I'm not mistaken.
