introducing waqt.org

today, i took the arabeyes php extension of itl, the yahoo geocoding api, and the geonames api and put together waqt.org.

it’s a fairly minimalistic prayertimes site. the code is available on github. note that the calculation method is currently hardcoded to use the isna method, but this is fairly easy to change.

Allaahu akbar! Maa shaaʾ Allaah! This is great, akhee. Jazaak Allaahu khayran for putting this together. I tried it for Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia, and it pulled in the right times (within one minute, anyway, according to Minbar), except for fajr & ʿishāʾ, which use a different method from ISNA.

I do suggest you transliterate the ʿayn better. I know Egyptians love using numbers, but even a simple apostrophe is better and easier on the eyes than a 3. Just my personal opinion, though. You obviously know which marks I use anyway (the ones Wikipedia mentions).

Ma sha2 Allah, I like it, especially it can detect the correct spelling of cities almost unknown

Very nice Ahmad, ma sha’ Allah. A little label beside the text box would be useful, and may be a hint describing acceptable inputs :)

    jazakumAllah khair for your comments.

@Basil – changed the 3s to apostrophes ;) insha’Allah will allow customizing the method soon. wait… some prayers use some methods and others use others? is this a common practice around the world?

@Ahmad – yahoo’s geocode api is to thank for that :p

@Mahmoud – jazakAllah khair for this great suggestion – i added a hint describing acceptable inputs (but my css isn’t good enough to make a nice looking label :) ).

What would be really cool is integrating Firefox 3.5 geolocation.

See the “Find my location” link on http://www.flickr.com/map/.

@ja – did it: check it out on ff3.5 or on the iphone! :p if you have location and you approve it, it automagically fetches prayer times for your current location.

speaking of the iphone, i need to write an iphone specific version at some point…

It’s great alhamdulillah. The RSS feature is just what I’ve been looking for.
