#!/bin/sh
APP_NAME="Etisalat_3.5G_USB_Modem"
APP_PATH="/Applications/Mobile Partner.app"
sudo chmod -R a+rwx "$APP_PATH"
chmod -R a+rw "/usr/local/"
the above code snippet is from the first few lines of one of the etisalat 3g usb modem’s postinstall script on osx – seriously, why chmod -R a+rw "/usr/local/"? no one uses /usr/local except etisalat?
the modem is a huawei e1550 hsdpa usb stick.
update (june 16, 2011) – @AhmedElGamil sent this post to @EtisalatMisr over twitter, and they said they would forward it to the responsible team insha’Allah. you can see the conversation on twitter here.
my machines typically have had some sort of video game related (and specifically, rpg related) names.
some names i’ve used in the past:
- meribia – a town from the lunar rpgs
- weltall – a “gear” name from xenogears
- termina – a city from chrono cross
- zanarkand – a city from ffx
- dalmasca – a city name from ffxii
- lab32 – a location from chrono trigger
the machine names in bold are in-use as of this post’s writing. some of these were actually named for a reason – termina was named because it’s a linux box (ie a linux termina-l), for example, and zanarkand was named because it was a far away city (and the laptop traveled far away from home). interestingly enough, zanarkand actually refers to “zanarkand ruins,” a place left in ruins in ffx. by mere coincidence, this happened to also become the fate of that laptop.
i’ve typically named servers by city names (ie makkah, madinah, aqsa), but have now started using names related to the domain name(s) hosted on that machine.
oh, and any printer i have gets named hydralisk, after the famous zerg creatures from starcraft.
after much trouble to get things to install, my home machine is now up and running with gentoo 64!
i am/was kind of surprised to see a whole bunch of random people sitting in front of frys when i went there this morning. at first, because of their dress and appearance, i thought maybe they were homeless people or something sleeping in front of the store. later in the day when i saw the same scene at another store, i realized that these were the people sleeping in front of the store to get their hands on one of the first ps3s…
was pretty amazed to find out that most new intel boards only have 1 ide slot these days… i guess ide is a thing of the past now…
*update* – some interesting articles about this whole ps3 thing. and, the smashing of a ps3 in front of those who waited in line for so long just to get one…
my desktop is sorta dying… everytime i reboot, it kinda sits there doing nothing, and i often have to shut it off and turn it on for it to work (sometimes more than once). when it does decide to come on, i often get a message about “dram timing is loose” – not sure if this means my ram is going bad or if my board is going bad… either way, its not good news.
i can now browse the net on my palm using bluetooth… not exactly sure why this is really helpful, but its pretty neat just to be able to do it. i found a pretty nice guide on the gentoo forums.
i gave bloglines a try today… it seems pretty neat, but for some reason, it doesn’t seem to me that it truly sticks to its promise of checking the site hourly. either way its kinda neat.
peace. err, its been a week since i posted last.
so i found an awesome masjid not too far from where i live now. 23 acres of land, they have a school (not sure how big the school is or to what grades/levels, etc), a gym, basketball court, soccer field, etc. the founder is a very well educated guy [according to the (website)]. i heard him speak because he came to the masjid which i go to for jum3ah and he gave a really nice khutbah about the ornaments of this life.
also last week, i installed 1gb ram in my mac mini. opening the mini wasn’t too bad, but closing it was pretty bad. but i managed to do it without scratching it up, al7amdulillah. now everything seems to run a lot smoother.
i also took a little glance at an objective c tutorial. it seems as though you can write osx cocoa apps either in objective c or in java, and that there’s some means of bridging between the languages as well. pretty neat, but haven’t actually written any code with it yet.
i went apartment hunting this weekend… found nothing yet…
but anyway, that’s all for now.
