three books, wp 2.0, etc

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

peace... i installed wordpress 2.0 (actually, its been installed for a few days now, i installed svn version right before it came out because the download link was broken). as you can see, no asthetic changes here... but the control panel is much nicer... really beautiful. in addition, i installed a plugin (spam karma 2) to deal with the comment spam... so far so good, lets see how it fairs over the next while.

in any case, after watching the excellent (yet depressing) syriana movie, mansoor suggested i get the book the scorpion's gate by richard clark - so i picked it up and also picked up dan brown's digital fortress (at the recommendation of emad).

syriana by the way was excellent... i say it is depressing because of the fact that what it portrays feels like a very accurate picture of the state of matters as they are now. i also watched munich, but i didn't really like it. i felt it was very one sided, and i could not enjoy a movie whose plot was to kill muslims...

also, there is a new book, "islam & terrorism... myth vs reality," by mauri' saalakhan... it was just published recently in answer to a particular book that was attacking islam. should also be an interesting read.

i came across a pretty neat looking arabic typing tutorial program (open source) - its called kitab (kitab.sf.net). have not downloaded it yet, but from the screenshots, it looks good.

that's all for now...

its going to be a long week…

peaces. came back from the trip yesterday (sunday nite around 9ish). the traffic coming back was insane for part of the way (130 miles in 4 hours...). but al7amdulillah we made it back in ~14 hours.

the sky was really beautiful. i was driving around the close of 3asr and entrance of maghrib time, and man it was beautiful. it was like there were all these shades of blue that were coming together in some places. in other places, you could see what looked like a rainbow, but it was just because of how the different colors merged in layers and stuff. too bad i left my camera here though.

i saw the incredibles with my siblings on thanksgiving, it was a nice movie, i liked it (and so did they).

i guess that's about all. i did a tiny bit of code after work today, played some kingdom hearts too.

the only bad thing though is that i broke down and bought WoW (the normal one, not the collector's one). haha, OK is gonna kill me, and he has good reason to do so too... but i will insha'Allah not play too much. as a matter of fact, i haven't even opened it yet.

anyhow, time for bed, peace outs.

peaces.

highway insanity, heros

Friday, May 28th, 2004

greets... today, i was heading towards tech around 11:30 am, and as soon as i got off the highway, i saw a whole bunch of traffic. i thought to myself, "odd, its way past morning rush hour" - and while i was still on the ramp, i saw all these people u-turning off the highway and back up the ramp... so i did the same and took the highway from a few exits down by cumberland. i later found out that there was a man threatening to jump off the windy hill bridge, and i guess he did :-/ its pretty sad... God doesn't give anyone more than they can handle and tolerate...

anyway, on a less solemn note, i've been kind of wondering... or i guess realizing... we all know that in most movies, games, etc, the hero has to win - if the hero dies, then its just bad. so i am wondering why... i guess this question is triggered in my head by man on fire, and perhaps just general thought on rpg games... especially if the character buildup is really good and you feel like you know the character, i guess the main hero dying is a bad thing. i personally think so anyway... but as some rappers would say, "its sad cuz the bad guys always die."
